St. Louis County and St. Charles County experienced a surge in gas odor calls from late Thursday to Friday. Fire departments and utility provider Spire responded to more than 900 reports, mainly concentrated in North County, after a maintenance-related over-injection of Mercaptan—a chemical added to natural gas for safety detection—caused widespread rotten egg smells. Authorities emphasized the chemical's harmlessness, but frightened residents, recalling a recent explosion, requested urgent checks and repairs. Spire advises anyone detecting gas odors to report the concern immediately. More details here.
